The collection A as in Anything contains seven short stories united by themes such as free choice, clichés in fiction and in life, and the painful shortage of information provided by reality to help us make sense of it. Structured as games of free association with genres, subjects and styles – Zen Buddhist koan, classic Russian storytelling, whodunit, Kafkaesque narrative, and South American soap-opera – the stories represent an investigation of sorts, a search for clues and cause-and-effect relations that the characters are forced to conduct in an attempt to “decipher” the events in their lives. Paradox, uncertainty of point-of-view, and dark humor round out the book’s atmosphere.
